Diploma Completion Program

Do you know students who have dropped out of school? Are there former students of yours who have dropped out and you want to see back in school? Then you need to know about the Diploma Completion Program

The Diploma Completion Program (DCP) was created in August of 2003. The goal of the DCP is to locate 'missing' students and re-enroll them back into school. All students, grade 7 to 12 who become inactive after missing 15 consecutive days of school will be contacted by a DCP representative. Once an inactive student is contacted, the DCP will become an advocate for that student in finding the best available placement. Many of the inactive students the DCP meets with are ELL. The ELL Department is working with the DCP to phone families who don't speak English, and interpret the DCP services. The DCP can then connect the student with an individual (counselor or administrator) within a given area (Special Ed, ALC, ELL, etc.) and act as a clearinghouse within 24 hours, to get students re-enrolled as quickly as possible.

People of all ages will be helped by the DCP, not just the 13 to 18 year old. The ALC, Evening High School and HUBB Center provide many the opportunity to earn a diploma as an adult. Many times when the DCP calls on one student, they end up helping other family members as well. The DCP is eager to meet with all members of community and school groups about returning to SPPS to earn a diploma. They will come out to talk to groups in St. Paul about opportunities for diplomas through DCP.

Free Books for Young Readers

Bruce Larkin, the author of over two hundred children's books, has generously offered to donate to every kindergarten and first grade child in the United States a supply of his books to call their own.

The Literacy Empowerment Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, will distribute books through the Books from Bruce Program. Free books are available to educators to give to their students at www.literacyempowerment.org. Books are free. Educators only pay shipping and handling.

TEAE Addendum

Schools may distribute TEAE results and letters to parents at conferences or they may be mailed home along with report cards.

Re: Student Reports for TEAE and MN-SOLOM

The results of the Test of Emerging Academic English (TEAE) and the Minnesota Students Oral Language Observation Matrix (MN-SOLOM) will be arriving at your school between January 12 &endash; 23, 2003. The results sent to your school are in the form of individual student reports. Two copies need to be made of each report. One copy should be given to the ELL staff to place in the students' cum folders. The second copy should be brought to conferences to show parents who may have questions. The original individual student report should be sent home with each student.

Attached, you will find a letter in English that should accompany the reports being sent home with students. Please send the letter in English and in the native language of the family. The letter is available on the web at www.ell.spps.org under "Translated TEAE Documents" in English, Hmong, Spanish, Somali, Cambodian, and Vietnamese, as well as other languages.

A Trip to the Past! Looking at Today's Somali Life





These sessions will help district staff have deeper perspectives into the history, culture, and civil war experiences of Somali immigrants in Minnesota. A comparative overview of the past and present Somali life will be provided. Sessions will also cover what attracted the Somalis to Minnesota and how they have adapted to their new setting. Video clips and slide presentations will be presented depicting various aspects of Somali life.

Embedding Hmong Culture into the Social Studies Curriculum





Teachers will:

  • Learn about the richness of the Hmong culture.
  • Examine Hmong culture sample lesson plans as it relates to the Saint Paul Public Schools Social Studies Standards.
  • Receive a grade level Hmong Culture Kit containing a Teacher's Handbook, teacher resource books about the Hmong, children's literature, Hmong dolls, children's games, and traditional Hmong music.
  • Make and take samples to include in the culture kit.

Elementary Information

6th Grade ELL Teachers





Please mark your calendars for February 18th and 19th (3:30 - 5:30). These are your two opportunities to come to the mandatory training for the transition to junior high process for your 6th grade students. You need only attend one meeting and will be paid for 2 hours. We will show you how to electronically enter LAS and MN-SOLOM scores so we can compile the data for junior high counselors for placement for the 2003-2004 school year. More information about this meeting will be forthcoming.

Junior High Showcase Nights for families of 6th Graders






Your 6th grade students will soon be asked to choose a junior high or middle school for next year. Registration booklets will be sent out to schools starting January 20th. A list of the showcase nights are listed in the booklet, but we are listing them here for your information. IMPORTANT: If you have students who you believe will be level 1 or 2 in junior high, please advise them to apply to any school EXCEPT Ramsey, Murray, and Highland Junior High for next year. These schools will have Level 3 and up only. You will be hearing more about this during training in February (dates to be announced). Encourage your students to go to the showcase nights to find out more information about the schools they will attend next year.

Superintendent Launches Three New Book Clubs!

A partnership with Lawson Software and the American Refugee Committee will provide free copies of the book Of Beetles and Angels: The Remarkable Story of a Boy's Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard to all Saint Paul eighth graders. Five winners of an essay contest will each have an opportunity to change the world by designating an American Refugee project to receive a donation of $1,000 in their name for post-war relief efforts. You may recall, Mawi Asgedom, the author of the book, came to St. Paul Public Schools last fall to talk to students about his experiences in the refugee camps and immigrant life in the U.S. This was all made possible thanks to the tenacity and enthusiasm of ELL Jane Sevald, ELL teacher at Highland Park Senior High School.
