Mandarin Immersion - Focus on STEM

欢迎!   Welcome to Mandarin Immersion!

Saint Paul Public Schools offers a Mandarin Immersion Program at Jie Ming Mandarin Immersion Academy.

The Mandarin Immersion Program provides instruction in Mandarin across all core subject areas in order to produce bilingual, biliterate, and multibultural citizens of the world.  Students master grade-appropriate subject content, become fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and developskills at or beyond standards set for English-only programs.  The curriculum in the Mandarin Immersion Program incluse a s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) focus.  Kindergarten and 1st grade students are taught predominately in Mandarin.  Similarly, 2nd through 5th grade students receive most of their instuction in Mandarin, but also receive 30 minutes of English language arts daily.  Starting with the 2013-2014 school year, the Mandarin Immersion Program will serve Kindergarten to 2nd grade and will add a grade level each coming year up to 5th grade.

Here is What to Expect:

Teachers:  Teachers in the Mandarin Immersion program are native speakers of Mandarin and fluent in both Mandarin and English. Every effort will be made to provide teachers with appropriate and meaningful professional development to ensure effective teaching of language through the content areas.

Curriculum:  All elements of the curriculum are taught in Mandarin, exclusively, in the primary grades. A daily period of English language arts will be added at a later stage. We have developed STEM-focused curriculum using Mandarin as the language of instruction and expected language of learning. Every effort will be made to provide students with a well-balanced curriculum, especially involving literacy, math, science, and social studies.

Parents:  The program offers a rich and culturally diverse adventure for students and parents. Parents are encouraged to support the learning of their students by giving them every opportunity to hear and practice Mandarin and to participate in Chinese cultures outside the school day. All possible assistance will be given to parents to enable them to help and support their students.
